Thengaai Thuvaiyal (Coconut Thuvaiyal / Thogayal)


Grated coconut - 1 cup
Urid dhal (ulutham paruppu) - 4 teaspoon
Bengal gram (kadalai paruppu) - 2 teaspoon
Tamarind (puli) - small gooseberry size
Red chilly - 5
Salt - for taste
Asafoetida (perungaayam) - small piece
Sunflower oil - 1 teaspoon


  1. Heat oil in a pan for 2 minutes and add asafoetida.
  2. Add urid dhal, bengal gram, chilly in the pan and roast till they turn golden brown. Turn off the stove.
  3. Let it cool for 5 minutes
  4. Add tamarind, salt, chilly and the roasted ingredients in a mixer grinder.
  5. Coarsely grind it
  6. Add coconut with the above and again grind it coarsely. Do not grind it too nicely.
